iPhone fever has now hit a ,well, fevered pitch. The fine folks at the apple store were nice enough to bring us something to cool us down! Free Starbucks coffee! I was even able to keep my Starbucks cup. Some of us have been up since before dawn, so the coffee is much appreciated.
mmm coffee
The crowd is really building. I hope there are enough for everyone.

I've met so many interesting people while waiting in line for the iPhone. We have been sharing one person's internet connection to check emails and make blog posts.

People continue to arrive and get in line. Nobody is sure how many this store will have, but I'm hoping for at least 20 (if everyone in front of me buys 2, like I plan to)

people continuing to file in

As I am writing this, the Apple folks came out and covered up their windows with black. I used to joke with Steve that Pantone should rename the color Black to Jobs after the amount he wears!

Putting up the Jobs

Hanging around all day here has reinforced the importance of community on the web. Folks here were trading myspace page links (I shared our Superman Doomsday page with a few)

I'm trying to decide who should be my first phone call on my iPhone. Kobe joked that it better be him! I can't wait!

I admit it, I am a sucker for good marketing hype. That is why I always debate between accepting an invitation to the Super Bowl instead of staying home to watch the commercials on TV.

I was in a meeting with my team and there was excitement over the coming iPhone. A few of the team members were reassigning their workload so they could wait in line to get the iPhone. After about twenty minutes, i was hooked!
in line at the apple store

So I agreed to pick up the starbucks while Brian got the scones. Here we are number 10 and 11 at the Apple Store. I'll keep you posted.

Greetings from Cannes.

Cannes
I always love going to the Cannes lions festival each year to celebrate the best in advertising. Again, I was asked to judge, which I love. The only downside is that we can’t enter anything to stay completely above boards.

I’ve been seeing lots of old friends that I last saw here a year ago. My buddies at Farfar are still looking for their lost Lion award award which they buried in the sand at the beach after last year’s awards. I must have spent 4 hours helping them look the next morning, but to no avail.

While out and about, there was a promotional team handing out black bags of crisps labeled X-13D from Doritos. While I walked around the city, I tried some. They were quite tasty. On the bag were instructions to go to a website to help name these chips. Once I got back to my room, I went to the site: http://x13d.doritos.com/

Insert your voice here

On this site, you can submit a name for the great tasting crisps, but the real fun is in making your own TV commercial. While watching a standard TV spot, you call in and add your voiceover over the phone. A pretty nifty combination of technologies all for a bag of Doritos.

I just got off a flight to Pittsburgh and had the distinct pleasure of flying next to Bil Herd. For those who don’t know his name, Bil was one of the key guys during the infamous Commodore computer days. I met Bil years ago at CES in Vegas when Commodore was on top. When I met Bil, it was just after he strolled by the Atari booth and was offered a job on the spot! He didn’t take it, but it sure made for a fun evening talking about the offer and working for Jack Trameil again.

I was heading to Oakmont for the US Open, and Bil was heading to a technology conference where his work at Commodore was being recognized. We immediately reconnected and proceeded to spend a few hours on the plane catching up. Bil stil has his can do attitude and priceless sense of humor.

We were both on our laptops catching up on RSS news feeds when he asked me what I thought of the new CNN site. I commented that while I got my news from CNN, it came in through CNN’s RSS feed into my desktop so I rarely go to CNN’s site.

For those who aren’t familiar, RSS stands for Really Simple Sysndication and it’s a standard format for posting news feeds. My blog even has one that you can subscribe to! I don’t make any revenue from people visiting the site, so RSS is a great way to keep people in touch with the site.

For those who are making revenue off the site, an improperly crafted RSS feed can lead to the disappearance of your most loyal fans. As people fall in love with your site, users with RSS readers will add your RSS feed to get constant updates. Putting all of the content out on the RSS feed gives your top visitors little reason to actually visit your site.

While I strongly advocate adding RSS to your regularly changing content, I do recommend that you consider using it as teaser copy rather than total replication of your site. Put enough in the feed to fuel interest, but not enough to quench it.

Bil and I ended up spending the afternoon in an airport Starbucks trading stories of the good old days. He shared a nifty story about Commodore’s Amiga team having a fictitious person named ‘Joe Pillow’ who’s legend grew so great that he ended up being listed as a member of the development team. I just couldn’t imagine how much fun they must have had with this fictitious identity.

tiger is up there somewhere

We spent so much time that I was late getting to the Tiger Woods news conference and had to stand all the way in the back. Oakmont looks to be up to typical U.S. Open style and I’m excited to see some golf!
