While being caught up in the Olympics here in Torino, my assistant notified me of two things. One: he saw me at the Canada Hockey game (he got me seats on the glass: Check out the pic he saw in the FT. I'm wearing the white sweater and red scarf.) and two, I had a pending deadline back at home. It turns out that the 'Department of Assessments and Taxation' was looking to increase the property taxes on my summer home by 75%. Of course, I was a bit concerned and wanted to make sure they had their numbers correct. This had to be submitted by tonight at Midnight, Eastern time. Anyone who has tried to mail something from Italy, knew that I had a better chance of seeing Elvis.
On the back of the bill, they had a website listed. Not a simple form that I can print out, complete and mail, but a fully functional web site! The site was fabulous, retrieving my specific property record, related sales from the area and details on how they determined the value. After seeing all of this, I was able to assemble my appeal and submit it online.
No more waiting in line, rushing to the post office, or trying to find a stamp. Here in my hotel room, sipping some Banfi, I was able to file my appeal. My tax dollars appear to be going to something truly useful.
I still filed my appeal. :-)

I've been following your Blog - I had no idea you were here in Torino! Buffy and I were enjoying a glass of wine - and could have sworn we saw you - but dismissed the thought knowing our chances. I think the last time I saw you was during our Rugby days at Oxford!
Anyways - great work on the blog old chap! If you are going to be in Torino for the remainder - let's catch up at Cantine Risso. It is located very near the Po and makes for a nice place to have a drink in the evening (the wine cellar is well stocked and splendid).
All my best,
Warren
